Rainbow Six Series Part 10 - Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard
Can you believe we are 10 entries deep into our history of Rainbow Six series?
By 2011, mobile gaming was really taking off and many companies were looking at bringing some of the major licenses to the iOS and Android market. Gameloft was given the chance to turn Rainbow Six into a mobile success. Early indications were good as Gameloft had a lot of success with mobile shooters such as N.O.V.A and Modern Combat.
Shadow Vanguard was far more tactical than the last few Rainbow Six console games. Gameloft tried really hard to bring the series back to its more strategic roots. One of the things that many people liked was how you could use fiber optics to look into a room before you went in it. Here you could mark enemies and come up with a plan before you burst into the room. It made Shadow Vanguard a much more strategic kind of game. Each of the missions you take on would have a main objective that you had to do as well as a secondary objective for more skilled players.
There was a single player campaign that did not exactly blow people away, but the narrative going from mission to mission was set during the early days of the Rainbow team. There was also multiplayer modes which could be played via Bluetooth or online. Sadly back in 2011 mobile online servers were not quite what they are today and many people had various issues when trying to play online.
Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard was quite an ambitious game and one that really could have done with a sequel. We feel that had Gameloft been given another game that a Shadow Vanguard 2 could have been something truly awesome…. And most likely filled with a million micro transactions.
What we are looking at today may actually be the first Rainbow Six game that many people played!
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas (2006/2007) Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3The best way to think of Rainbow Six Vegas is as a whole new ball game for the series as this in many ways is actually serving as a reboot of the series. Ubisoft had a clear vision for what they wanted Rainbow Six to be going forward.
As you would expect the story is set in Vegas one of the tourist hot spots of the world. The basics of the story are that Las Vegas is going to be hit with one of the worst terrorist attacks of all time and only Rainbow team can stop it. One of the interesting things about the story is that you experience the majority of it in game and not with lengthy cut scenes. It actually works very well and immerses you in the action.
Gameplay wise, Ubisoft really changed things up as Rainbow Six Vegas feels like no other Rainbow Six game. While you could still give orders to your teammates (which you did with the d pad) things like regenerating health, 3rd person cover shooter sections and the fact that missions had checkpoints gave the game a much more action packed feel than any other game in the series. One of the coolest things they added was using ropes to move up and down the building all the while shooting! Gameplay was nice and tight and for many was that perfect blend of being action packed while also offering tactical based gameplay.
Rainbow Six Vegas was a huge hit. It was very well received, people love the single player campaign and multiplayer was very popular as well. In all, it was a great reboot of the series and actually introduced many new players to the series as well.
